Hi.
Picked up sail number 1246 about a year ago. A 1975 Mark II that we’ve named “Quixotic Juan”. The previous owner had done a fair amount of work and sold it lock, stock and barrel. It’s basically a “turnkey” sailboat. My First Mate (the Wife) and I have had it out a few times and it went pretty well for being operated by two people whose only knowledge of sailing is watching Pirates of the Caribbean. We have no ambitions of racing as there doesn’t seem to be another SJ21 within 300 miles of us. We would like to make a day sailer and limited overnighter out of it. Just a comfortable lake cruiser.
This is our first sailboat and I know almost nothing about getting around without burning fuel so there has been a pretty steep learning curve. I’ve been lurking here and learning what I can since we bought it. This has been a great resource for a luddite like me. I notice that information about these old boats is quickly evaporating from the web. Due to all the reading I’ve done I’m now concerned about the keel winch and cable. That will be addressed before our next outing but I’ll ask my questions in the General forum. Just wanted to introduce myself and thank everyone for the information repository you’ve created here.

Welcome aboard and congrats on the boat!

Welcome! but no way! There's TONS of information out there:) It's just these boats are old enough that there are some fairly proven ways to do things.Quixotic Juan wrote:I notice that information about these old boats is quickly evaporating from the web.
These forums, while not highly active, have a lot of people who check in regularly as well the larger Class website has active management. In addition the Fleet 1 website has a lot of articles written up about how to do things so make sure to check that out. And, if you're on Facebook there is a "San Juan 21 Sailboat" group as well as a class website that don't have a lot of discussion, but have many members that could be good resources for you.

Re: Checking in from Alabama
Thanks for the warm welcome.
C, I've just noticed that a fair number of links I've tried to follow have led to dead ends. Thinking of the Harbor and several other dead links I've tried to follow. This seems to be the go to repository for all that accumulated knowledge. I intend to take full advantage of it.
Thanks again!

Yes, the Harbor is pretty much dead, but a lot of that data is quite old anyways, and things have been updated. Definitely check out Fleet 1's website, we have newish articles on almost everything you'd ever want to do, within the realm of racing of course:) as we're a fairly racing oriented fleet. We always try to get the "cruising" events going, but they just don't seem to attract as many people. I think possibly cruising is a bit more of a solo affair and anytime you get 2 or more of a boat, the race is on:)
