East Commodore Message 27 March 2014

Post by RLDommel » Thu Mar 27, 2014 2:28 pm

First of all congratulations to Kyle Everly (SJ 21 #1989) for being the overall winner the Trans Monroe Regatta held at Lake Monroe (Sanford, FL) on 1 March . The event was a PHRF event with about 35 entrants.

12 SJ 21's were on the starting line for the Mid Winter Championships at Lake Norman Yacht Club on 15 March. The conditions (70 F, 5-10 mph) on Sat were ideal for some great competitive racing with 5 races run. Unfortunately, the rain and cold that arrived overnight resulted in the fleet staying high and dry on Sunday. Results are at the end of this blurb. It was great to have on the water new sailors to the area such as Patrick Rykens and Jeffrey Davis.

And, of course, some secrets of the mysterious "can of percussion" were revealed by the uber talented Mike Robinson, with Juaner Don Olive on the drums, at Shoals Grill Friday night.

This is copied from the SJ 21 web site:

NEW MEMBER SPECIAL
New members joining the class association on or before April 30, 2014 will get their first year FREE! Print this new member form, complete it, and mail to the address below (it's on the form) to take advantage of this limited time offer!

Therefore, if you are a new to the class or a friend of the class you can join for free this year. If you know of someone who may be interested or needs to join, please let them know before 30 April. Of course, current members should have renewed by now.

The Organizing Authority for the 2014 Eastern SJ 21 Championships to be held at Lake Norman Yacht Club on 28-31 August (Labor Day Weekend) has been assembled. The OA consists of LNYC Fleet #38 Captain Mike Robertson, Class Measurer Mike Chesser and the Eastern Commodore.

Some highlights will be measurement beginning on the 28th. If your boat was measured at the 2013 NA's you will not need to be measured unless work (e.g., new mast, etc.) was done on your boat since the NA's. However, your sails will need to be checked for a measurement stamp and, of course, new sails will be measured. And, once again, Friday eve is reserved for more food, drink and singing with Mike at the grill.

Here is a partial list of sailing venues for San Juan 21s this year:

Keowee SC, Keowee Cup 3, 4 May
LNYC Hospice 31 May, 1 June
LNYC 4th July Open 5, 6 July (usually has a great fireworks show!)
Fishing Bay One Design, 9, 10 August
LNYC Eastern Nationals, Labor Day Weekend
Columbia SC, Outback Regatta 20, 21 Sept. (great steaks!)
Waccamaw SC, Indian Summer Reg., 11, 12 Oct.
Western Carolina SC, Hospice 17, 19 Oct.
Columbia SC, Midlands Open 8, 9 Nov.

Please let me know of other regattas that Juans can go to and I will publicize in the next blurb.

One of the great features of the San Juan 21 you can go to most regattas and if there is not a one design group of Juans, you can usually compete in a PHRF division.

Next year, it will be time again for the North Americans to held in the east so the SJ 21 Executive Committee will be accepting bids from the fleets for holding the 2015 event. I would like to have the bids in (venue & date) and be able to announce at the E National Mtg this Labor Day.

The Lake Murray Yacht Racing Assn (LMYRA) Spring Series is underway. The SJ 21 is the largest fleet. Fleet #31 has seven boats racing (58 registered).

c u on the H2O!
