Boom Downhaul
Hi, finally ready to get my boat in the water for the first sail. Bought it last fall (well used!), and have spent the time since making numerous repairs. While practicing rigging in my driveway, I found that the boom has a short length of line through a ring on the bottom of the gooseneck, but ther...

Re: A Jarhead in Arkansas
Just a short comment on your plan to make a rudder out of aluminum. I'm sure it would steer the boat, but the stock rudder has an airfoil shape. An aluminum rudder would not be class legal, if you wanted to join a club and try racing. For day sailing or camp cruising, i'm sure it would be fine! Fair...

Re: Outboard Motor
Just as a follow-up, I bought a new Tohatsu 4 hp. It has its own tank, and F-N-R shifter. Honda uses a remote tank, and smaller hp motors don't have reverse; you have to spin the motor around 180 degrees. Plus Tohatsu has a good rep. A winning combination of features for me, and paid much less than ...

Re: Outboard Motor
Thank you all for your input. I will concentrate on long shaft motors! kuriti: I considered propane, but could only find one manufacturer; they seem to have a spotty reputation for quality, ease of starting, and customer service. gleninst: Lakes, flood control reservoirs only (for now...) As for tro...

Re: Outboard Motor
I am seriously considering a Torqeedo Travel 1003. Available in long shaft. It can now be found new or gently used for about the same as new Tohatsu. I dislike gas outboards. I see too many people at the launch ramp fiddling with them. Mostly fisherman with small outboards on 16-18 foot aluminum ski...

Outboard Motor
Has anyone attempted to use a short shaft outboard with the standard, factory-installed bracket? It looks to me as though it would immerse the propeller, particularly with my portly self sitting close to the transom to operate it...

Re: Hull to hull liner repair
So I've been working on another problem that I didn't see until I started cleaning and poking around the interior. I had noticed a black spot right up in the upper corner of the stem area, where the deck and the bow come together. I found that there is a wooden block which seperates the chainplate f...

Trailer Tires
I decided to replace the tires on the trailer I bought in September, because their age is unknown and they have sidewall cracking. It's a single axel trailer (a Fleet Cap'n brand made in New Bern), and the tires are 4.80-12 Load Range B. If I'm correct, the boat weighs at least 1,440 pounds and the ...
