Portsmouth and Core Sound Trip Report
I have been sailing a lot during lockdown. Strangely I spent more time on my sailing canoe than the SJ21, but both have been out. I counted 5 weekends in a row that I was on a boat on my local lake and I have been itching to get to the coast for a weekend, so I talked my 17yr old into escaping the h...

Re: Replacing Halyards
I switched to 1/4 synthetic line about 10 years ago and am still using those lines with original blocks/sheaves. I recommend using dynemma/vectran cored line as it doesn’t stretch. Couple of years ago I pulled them and re-tied them from the opposite end to extend their life since they wear when they...

Re: Standing Rigging Questions
Chainplate, yeah probably time, they should be straight. Of the two stays pictured, the right one looks correct. My guess is previous owner replaced with wire that was not made for stays. Here is an opportunity to switch to an adjustable back stay!

Re: Keel locking pin Issue
Same for me as Badger. I have to crank mine a few turns to line up. Also, I gave up using a bolt because of the right tolerance and just use a big ass Phillips. Once through the hole, I crank the winch to rest the keel weight on the screwdriver so it won’t come out. That said, I only pin mine in big...

Re: Bungee Cords on Tilt Up Rudder
I just use trial and error. In the past I found an adjustable bungee at Home Depot like the one in this link. That was nice because it was adjustable on the fly. Most recently I just tied a knot and played with it while on the trailer so that it snaps closed and has enough resistance not to kick up ...

Re: Bow eye above or below roller on trailer?
After this post I was in my garage and realized I have two side bunks hanging on the wall from the trailer I am storing for my parents boat. I didn’t use them because I assumed I would have to reinstall on their trailer as needed. I converted their trailer to a canoe trailer, but have to go pull the...

Re: Bow eye above or below roller on trailer?
That’s where I get all my trailer parts too. Just hard to justify that dough for a nice to have. I will keep a look out on Craigslist. The only critical part is the bent aluminum.

Re: Bow eye above or below roller on trailer?
Great job! I need some side bunks. Hardest part at the dock is keeping it aligned as I pull up the trailer, especially in a cross wind. I was going to do it originally, but ran out of money and then just forgot about it. Might need to start looking around for some.
