Re: Wooden Rudder
Mine is made of oak and is a kick up kind. A couple of years ago, I was considering making a single blade rudder out of cedar and fiberglass. The idea was to cut down the weight since I store the rudder in the cabin when the boat is on it's mooring. However, I never seemed to find the time.

Keel gasket
Hello, Any thoughts on the effectiveness of the sail cloth keel gasket? What would happen if it was removed? I realize it's supposed to make the boat go faster, but would you notice the speed decrease when just cruising? Mine is intact, but very stiff. I moor the boat over the summer and this past s...

Boom Tie Down
My boat came with a line attached to the boom that I have been cleating to the mast to hold the boom from riding up the mast when the main sail is up. However, to adjust tension in the sail, this arrangement makes that task difficult to do. Does anyone have any suggestions on other ways this can be ...

New sails
Does anyone have any recommendations on purchasing new sails? I'm considering a new main and jib. I believe the sails that came with my boat are the original Clark sails.

Re: Boat Lift?
Here in Madison WI, I keep my boat on a mooring. Lake Mendota is about 5 miles across so it can get rough at times. In our marina, most sailboats are on moorings. However, 6 or so sailboats are on lifts with their masts up and everything seems to work fine. I never liked setting the boat up each tim...

Re: Rigging a Topping Lift
I ended up providing a snap hook to attach the topping lift to the boom. I then ran a line thru a small block that I installed to the casting at the top of the mast. The line runs down the mast and is cleated at the base of the mast. After a summer of use, everything worked fine. Much better than cl...

Chainplate Leaks
Hello, I'm working to get my boat ready for the season. One of the items on my list is to fix the leak at one of my chain plates. When it rains hard, ther is always a little water that enters the cabin from one of the plates. The bulkhead seems OK and it looks like the previous owner caulked around ...

Re: Albemarle Sound Trip Report
What a great adventure! Thanks for sharing.
I have moored our boat for the past couple of seasons here on Lake Mendota, but have never attempted a trip such as you describe. I'm not sure my sailing abilities would be up for it.

Adding a Traveler
Hello, last week I had the pleasure to go sailing on a Catalina 38 up in Lake Superior. I was impressed at how high we could point using their traveler system. My current boat does not have one. So, I am considering adding one and would like to know other San Juan 21 owner's experiences with them. S...
