Re: Chain Plates
I would drill out the rivets, then remove the chain plate. Using the bent nail method, drill out all the wood to about 1/4 inch past all four corners p, so you have a 2x3”ish void. Tape up the hole from the bottom, Mix up epoxy and colloidal silica to a mayo consistency or slightly thinner. Pour tha...

Re: Adding stanchions?
I just got a Genoa last year and mostly use it for down wind wing on wing when it’s dead, so limited tacking experience, but haven’t had issues with it snagging. If falling off is a big concern, a cheaper and likely more effective solution could be a harness and a jackline tied to the mast and bow. ...

Re: Adding stanchions?
I have thought about it, especially when the kids were younger. Decided it would probably just get in the way in the cockpit and not be tall enough to do much on deck. A 2 foot tall lifeline would not stop me from falling in. I have dragged a polypropylene line behind the boat when singlehanded. I t...

Re: Hull # 396 restoration questions
I looked and realized I never posted a write up in the port lights, rather I shared some links in another post. Here you go: i found this article very helpful on the portlights: https://www.sailmagazine.com/diy/replacing-fixed-portlights Helpful for cutting plexiglass. I bought a full sheet at a loc...

Re: Hull # 396 restoration questions
You should pull all deck fittings and drill/fill them with epoxy. The number one concern of all SJ 21 owners should be water intrusion into the deck/transom. All other sins will be forgiven. I still use my original chain plates, but pulled them and rebeded. If original, it’s probably time to change ...

Re: Hull # 396 restoration questions
Hey! My $.02. 1,2- I have a MkII where the boxes are factory cut out. That is where I store my battery. 3. Stephen is definitely the easiest/best option for a tiller replacement, but you could easily make your own too. Look at pics online or one of us could take measurements if you need. Do you have...

Albemarle Sound Trip- Covid edition
Covid. What a pain in the ass. Even though everyone else was acting like it was a long snow day, my job didn't change at all and I was working a lot, just from home. The kids had been out of school for a few weeks and I had planned to take my 16yr old son to a music festival in Charleston for two ni...

Re: Any tips for looking at a boat?
Maybe too late, but here is what comes to mind: Deal Stoppers : these two would potentially cause me to walk away -Deck core is number uno. Walk on the deck, does it flex alot, are there soft spots? Is there crazing or cracks in the deck gelcoat? go inside and look for stains where through deck fitt...
