Re: 2012 Seattle NOOD is better than St. Pete
Hey, it's time to start building up your alcohol tolerance for the 2012 Seattle NOOD. While the weather may not be as warm as Florida, I can guarentee that we'll have a better party and more boats... OK, the party may be the same but we'll definately have more boats... Kermit will be there, who wan...

Re: Bow Chock bolt
Three-to-one boatwork/sailing ratio seems to be the consensus. In places like New England or Wyoming or Wisconsin, with long winters, it may be higher. But that's one reason Maine boats are generally better-looking than Florida boats. Less time on the water, more evenings in the barn, polishing teak...

Re: Bow Chock bolt
Mast plate is model MS1: http://garhauermarine.com/catalog_process.cfm?cid=68 It fits the SJ21 mast base PERFECTLY, tho threading the hinge pin becomes a bit trickier. Typical Garhauer construction, which is to say 'massively overbuilt.' Lots and lots of holes. Nice bonus: put the pointy end aft and...

Re: Bow Chock bolt
HI Kuriti, The bow chocks on Krysia Ry, a Mk III, are nutted and entombed in glass, something I found out when re-bedding. I had to use a chisel to cut in to the glass inside the cabin. Good luck Bill Ps Oh and they are not spaced the same from starboard to larboard from the deck/hull seam. Lots of...

Re: VOR's and Pirates! ARRRRRR!
What a strange race. Six boats show up to the line. Only half those make the first (easy) leg to Cape Town under their own power. The boats and programs have become so outlandishly expensive, only a few sponsors can be found -- and the mobile billboards must visit obscure ports of call and have harb...

Re: Sailing under the London Bridge, anyone?
Thinking about it. There may be one Deep South SJ21 heading that way. My neighbor here in Laramie keeps his Potter 19 on Havasu for the winter & is badgering us to go with them this year. Dunno. I like to sleep on the boat & spend more time sailing than socializing or eating. & If I'm driving 1900 m...

Re: Initial Spreadsheet check
Ah. Splicing Vectran or Technora parallel cored line is beyond most amateurs. We just tied ours to the halyard shackle; sure, that compromises strength -- but then the line is rated at something like 4000#, so we didn't worry too much. :P One additional advantage of a knotted vs. spliced halyard: a ...

Re: Initial Spreadsheet check
Re: running rigging. Jib downhaul can be very thin; topping lift and main downhaul can be 3/16"; outhaul can be 1/8", tho 3/16" is easier to handle. For halyards, I HATE halyard creep & advise splurging for some hi-tech core, like Technora or NE Ropes' VPC. Stronger, 30% lighter, half the stretch of...

Re: Swagging vs compression fittings for rigging
Hooo. The problem with swaging is it, too, needs to be done right. Does your local wire rope shop have a proper roller swager? Some West Marines have one, but I sometimes wonder how well-trained the people operating the machine are. The thing about swages, of course, is that they only as strong as t...

Re: Swagging vs compression fittings for rigging
As well to say swaging is inferior if done incorrectly. What matters is that compression fittings are stronger than swages (swedges, whatever) when BOTH are done correctly. And to be honest, it is pretty damned hard to screw up a compression fitting. Compressions are specified by many top NAs on hig...
